Which people foods are safe for dogs to eat? We know it’s sometimes hard to resist giving your dog a bite of your food. The cute face and puppy dog eyes do their magic and the guilt sets in. But is what’s on your plate safe to share? There are plenty of foods that are not only safe to share, but GOOD for your pup in moderation — so make sure to keep this list handy for future reference!
Peanut Butter
Not only is peanut butter a good source of protein and healthy fats but it can be used as a tool during bath time or placed inside a toy for hours of fun. Just make sure to avoid the “sugar free” versions as they can contain toxic ingredients like artificial sweeteners that can cause harm.
Cooked Chicken, Beef, Pork or Turkey
Healthy, lean meats without the skin or excess fat are great for dogs to enjoy. Skip the deli slices and save them some chunks from the whole chicken or turkey to chow down on. Just make sure to avoid bones, as they can splinter or get stuck and cause harm during digestion.
Eggs
Another great source of digestible protein that dogs can benefit from! Just make sure to give them the cooked version since raw eggs can cause biotin deficiencies.
Apples
Dogs love a good crunchy apple slice to chomp into, and they are a good source of vitamin A and C. Just make sure to cut them into slices and not give them the core.
Sweet Potatoes
Dogs will go crazy for their own version of “potato chips” when these are sliced and baked or dehydrated! They offer a good source of fiber while acting as a nice chewy treat!
Rice
Cooked rice sans heavy sauces is a great option if your dog needs an easy, bland meal because of an upset tummy. Pair it with a few chunks of chicken and make any pup feel much better!
Oatmeal
Looking to give your dog a little extra fiber in their diet? Oatmeal is a yummy treat to help those pups with irregular bowel issues. It’s also safe for wheat-sensitive canines. Just make sure it’s fully cooked and doesn’t have added sugar or artificial sweeteners!
Other fruits
Bananas, pineapple, watermelon, blueberries, pumpkin and oranges are fruits that your dog can safely enjoy when given in manageable bite-sized pieces. Give your dog these sweet and tasty fiber-rich treats in moderation.
Other vegetables
Green beans, cucumber, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, carrots, and peas are all healthy options to allow your pup to grab a bite of! Share those veggies!
You can easily scrape these into your dog’s bowl when it comes to dinner time or prepare any of these in advance as a freeze-pop or “cookie” treat. During the summer months you can freeze a variety of fruits or veggies in cubes for a cool-down snack, or mix it with a spoonful of peanut butter, yogurt and/or ripe bananas to make a mixture you can freeze into “cookie” bites!
